Joe’s childhood dream was to make music and play for an audience. At the early age of only 14 Joe bought his first pieces of equipment,
a DR225 and Akai 1000 with the earnings he made from odd end jobs. Today the DR225 is considered very antique but with it Joe was able to build a strong foundation on how to program drum rhythms. He grew up listening to the productions of Africa Bambaataa, Grandmaster Flash, Kraftwerk, Herbie Hancock, etc.
Joe did everything he could to further establish his dream. He sold his most prized possession, his scooter, which he received for his 16th Birthday, for two turntables! He continued to save money from more Holiday work, and then finally he was able to buy a keyboard and a sequencer. With these tools he was ready to release his first record under the name "Sakana".
In 1990 Joe started work for Sunrise Radio 88.75FM doing the daily drive show back to back with DJ Ellis Dee his listener base grew and grew and soon was playing for the likes of Rain dance, Fantastic Ibiza, Genesis, Elevation and resident at the Limelight and Turnmill's as well as touring the UK as DJ MAD AXE.
In middle 1991 Joe started up Kool FM 94.5 with another dj called Smurf and the Palm tree club in Edmonton This pirate radio stn was to be come the central core for all drum n bass / jungle fans everywhere.
In 1992 With Kool FM already a massive hit on the underground Joey set to work on a new Pirate radio called Impact 88.2FM, This was to reach out to the other forms of music that was breaking through in the UK. This too became a well known name all over London and further a field . All time playing his own sets he promoted the other dj's as well.
In 1992 Joey aka Mad Axe Released a number of tracks one being with Rob Playford from Movin Shadow records the 2nd release on the label under the name DVS the other was on the Warriors dance label 1st came Scream feat Keith Douglas and the 2nd Midnight massacre a massive hit on the Jungle scene.
In February 1992 After several big tunes under his belt, 51st State (the company which released his first record) asked Joe to start his own label for them; Strong Island was born on February 1992. He started producing tracks with the help of some friends: DJ Crazy, E-Sharp (Ice Inc) and Professor (Warriors Dance). Classics from this label include: Fire & Ice, Bring da noize, circuit 69, last the last E, Funky dog, I got it and that’s me which was a massive hit all over Europe’s rave scene.
Due to the increasing success of Strong Island he was sought after by such artists like: Josh Wink, Jam and Spoon, Renault, Izit tribe, Funkzion, E-Groove, etc to produce remixes for them.
Joe Vasquez has also produced under various artist/project names in different styles of dance music. After several releases on Strong Island he started the sub-label of Strong Island. On this label he released more minimalist and experimental tracks.
In Mid 1994 Joe was spending more and more time abroad so an office was opened in Berlin Germany where he went on to play as resident in the Tresor and Ewerk as well as tour all over Germany and host his radio show on Kiss FM Germany
Joey Vasquez has also performed live at events such as Holland's biggest outdoor dance-event: Dance valley as well as Switzerland’s Street parade and Berlins Love parade as well as each year at Notting hill carnival.
In December 1999 he stopped doing STR due to a dispute with the distributor Gallop.
In 2001 JV started a new label called Impact and Impact Booking's DJ Agency. The agency is responsible for booking some major players in the hard house and techno scene such as Glenn Wilson, Trevor Rockcliffe, Carl Cox, Damon Wild, etc. Since 2001 the agency has built quite a reputable name for itself since all of Joey Vasquez’s experience in the music industry has shaped what a good agency should be: prompt, reliable and honest.
In 2002 - 2003 His own label Impact was put on hold as it encountered some problems with distribution, but now he is working with Zoom to continue the releases on Impact. He has future plans to have the artists of Impact bookings release on the label.
In 2001 - Joe started up a company World Dance radio which was to set new standards in getting music out from DJ’s all over the world to people everywhere. The brand logo WDRFM has grown in size each year Worlddance now has franchises in Germany Greece and Netherlands who are setting up radio broadcasting studios and combining there knowledge.
World Dance Radio is today helping to promote fresh talent all over the world.
World Dance radio is currently moving forward on 3 new projects to set up WDR in Johannesburg, South Africa another in Portland Oregon USA & Sydney, Australia.
Joey Vasquez will also be releasing on these labels, so keep your eyes and ears open...
